Chaos

Thursday, May 1, 2008

There was a time when she used to collect five peso and ten peso coins. She’d put them in a coin bank and after a year, would crack it open and then put the coins in plastic bags, php500 per bag. Then she’d go to the nearest bank and deposit the bags of coins to her ATM account.

Recently - that is, in the last two or three years - she resorted to spending the said coins rather than saving them for a year. It could have been brought about constantly being broked (err, broken?). However, she still had managed to save a few bags in 2006, kept them in her overly chaotic old things aka unimportant, outdated wasteful materials, and had forgotten about those.

And then when she came home last week, she found out that aside from her, her other two family members were utterly penniless, as well. Alas, the power of coins can save you. She rummaged through the overly chaotic old things aka unimportant, outdated wasteful materials to look for the long forgotten bags of coins in order to uplift their situation from being utterly penniless to err, slightly penniless.

Actually, she never found the coins.

Lesson learned? Well, you get to choose: either never underestimate the singkong butas, or be very, very organized.

iBlogged.

The 4th Philippine Blogging Summit paved its way last Saturday, 26th of April 2008. It was the first time for me to attend the event though I’ve heard it for two years already from my brother. The schedule followed goes like this:

9:00 - 9:20            Flag Ceremony, Welcome Remarks, Keynote

9:20 - 9:45            How to Blog (from a non-problogger point-of-view) - Charo Nuguid

9:45 - 10:00         Blogging Lessons Learned - Brian Gorell

10:00 - 10:30       Break

10:30 - 11:00       From Student Blogger to ProBlogger - Juan Karlo Licudine

11:00 - 11: 30      Photoblogging - Juned Sonido

11:30 - 12:00       Blog to Print - Jonas Diego

12:00 - 1:00         Lunch

1:00 - 1:40            Vlog and Podcasting Prospects in the Philippines - Aileen Apolo and Coy Caballes

1:45 – 2:45           Blogging and 2010 Elections Panel
- Manuel L. Quezon III
- Luz Rimban
- Janette Toral

2:40 - 3:10            Legal Challenges in Blogging - Atty. JJ Disini

3:10 - 3:30            Break

3:30 - 3:50            Blogging for Advocacy - Noemi Lardizabal Dado

3:50 - 4:30            Blogging from the Countryside - Ria Jose

4:30 - 5:00            Closing Remarks / Group Picture / Raffle

Schedule taken from http://iblogph.org. Actual video footage of parts of the event can be viewed from http://philippineselection.blogspot.com/. You can also click on the names of the speakers to view their respective blogs.

Some notes from the event. I joined the registration committee and some of the participants were looking for a programme. The organizers somewhat forgot about printing a programme. But then, that was only a minor problem. Overall, the event is still a success.

Brian Gorell made his presentation via Youtube. I think his talk and his blog is somehow inconsistent, as his blog presents everything against what he talked about.

I find it hard to give credibility to pinoyblogero, the next one who talked about getting into problogging. I don’t know, this is coming from a technically non-blogger perspective (obviously I have a blog, but I write as I please; not for whatever else goal). I happened to be a person who gives credit based on what I hear or read from you, not by what your name implies. My seatmate told me that he had come across the speaker’s blog once, I haven’t. And his presentation, for ME, is lacking. I missed his point. If he happened to come across this entry, I am not sorry if he read it. Take it as a pointer, man.

The next two topics were interesting: photoblogging and blog to print. Juned of baratillo.net showed off his different photography instruments, a.k.a, cameras. And by gawd, I was envious. Phonecam, digicam, TLR, fisheye, SLR, about three more, you name it. He also advised that he still prefer manual than digital photography. On the other hand, blog to print speaker Jonas Diego discussed how blogging serves as a medium for comic artists like him.

The afternoon topics can be described as a haiku. A pretty heavy topic sandwiched by lighter ones. Coy Caballes of CokskiBlue and Arlene Apollo of Google Philippines showed a video presentation regarding podcasting and video blog or vlog. Though the sounds were not polished (in our presentations in school, we dubbed the ‘scripts’ so the class can hear it more audibly), they were witty enough PLUS they also featured vlogs such as that of HappySlip.

The Election topic covered by Luz Rimban, MLQ and Ms Janette Toral focused on how bloggers can play a role in having a clean election. Questions raised revolved around the difference or similarity of journalists and bloggers, and Korina Sanchez’ attack on blogosphere.

Atty. JJ Disini shared the copyright issues and concerns involved in blogging. Linking is under fair use, also quoting short parts, i.e., 10% of the text or at most 200 words. Some asked questions whether uploading a whole show in youtube can be considered copyright infringement, even if the show you uploaded includes you. The answer: yes, it is copyright infringement. Reason: the show holds all the rights for their videos, even though you, yourself are invited or interviewed in there.

Next off is Ms Noemi Dado, who discussed how to advocate through blogging. Her blog, YanAngPinay, filipinaimages.com is advocating on how to change the image of Filipina we see online.

The last speaker is a blogger from Davao City, Ria Jose. She has a couple of blogs published, and I wonder how she gets to monitor all those. Her slides made me crave again to go to Mindanao and explore all their wonderful places.

At the end of the day, I have scribbled down a total of 47 blogs from the speakers, sponsors and participants. Here’s the list in alphabetical order:

Why NPA?

Monday, April 28, 2008

Blogging has never been a serious thing I considered. Before, when the blogging community started to grow, I thought they were just a bunch of people wanting to hear their hearts out to the world wide web. Where a diary is very much personal, the blog can be viewed by the public and is open for comments or opinions.

Early in 2006, I created my first blog as a requirement in my English 10 class. The professor was going out of the country so he made us submit our papers online through blogging. The class agreed to use Friendster Blog since almost everyone has an account there.

At Multiply, my first entry was dated Jan.02, ‘07 eventhough I am a member since 2004.

Recently, I attended the 4th Philippine Blogging Summit or iBlog4. I’ve heard about it from my brother since he was once a speaker and a host in their previous events. I got curious with what topics regarding blogging they discuss in the summit so I made it a point to attend last Saturday’s event.

At the end of the day, I learned a lot of interesting things such as gaining profit from blogging, the wondrous photoblogs, a large Mindanao blogging community, how bloggers can help clean election, advocacy blogs, policies on writing blog entries, the difference (or similarity) of bloggers and journalists, and many more. Whatever happened to my idea of blog as only an online diary.

My normal internet life (before this) would be to check my mails, Multiply, and two blogs from two different journalists, Howie Severino and Jessica Zafra.

Anyway, enough of my blogging history. The point is I got interested to take blogging seriously that resulted in the creation of this account. Unlike my Multiply blog, this one would only discuss issues of my diverse interests such as Ayn Rand’s Objectivism,  Bayang Barrios music, Howie Severino and Kara David, Jessica Zafra’s twisted-ness, movies I like, BOOKS I like, photography, photojournalism, nature, CATS, children issues, theater, ice skating, etcetera. From time to time, it may also post opinions on the world’s stupidity, a.k.a. current events, whether inside or outside the country.

Why NoPermanentAddress?

There’s no (bitter) better way on how to describe my life, as it is.
